You know there are Quilt Happenings all across our nation that are not quilt shows... and they are fabulous exhibits! I thought I'd share a few I heard about.. then YOU share any YOU know of in the comments!
A HUGE event is the Quilter's Hall of Fame Triple Anniversary Celebration in Marion Indiana. Where my friend Merikay Waldvogel will be inducted to the hall as an honored quilter.. I'm so excited for her! This event starts July 16 and goes on for several days.

A new exhibit "Kaleidoscopic Quilts: The Art of Paula Nadelstern" is running right now at the American Folk Art Museum in NYC.
"Every artist must find a voice that feels true and strong. Paula Nadelstern (b. 1951) found hers early in her career as a quilt artist, inspired by a bolt of sensuous and beautiful Liberty of London fabric. The bilateral symmetry of the design was an epiphany that stirred Nadelstern's imagination and that has yielded a seemingly infinite vein of creative expression for more than twenty years. Focusing first on the kaleidoscopic quality in the symmetry, Nadelstern innovated new techniques and developed a highly refined, intricate, and distinctive personal aesthetic."

and sewing machines went only in straight lines, quilt shows were sleepier
affairs.
This summer, you can find plenty
of Grandmother's Flower Garden and many other vintage quilt patterns at
state fairs, craft shows and regional festivals. But a handful of events gather
the best of the traditional plus new quilts as startling and original as the
best modern art (and nearly as expensive). The number of quilt makers in the
U.S. has doubled in the past decade, as new tools, like quilt-design software,

Just attended Paula Nadelstern's museum talk and saw the display at the American Folk Art Museum yesterday. It was truly inspiring! Her work is certainly worthy of an exhibit of this caliber.

The Missouri History Museum has a wonderful exhibit of the Ghees Bend Quilts until Sept... Here is the link...

I don't know of any festivals but I've always been fascinated by quilts painted on barns. This is a site that tells the location of many of them and I always thought it would be fun to see many of them in person.
