Houston Antique Quilts

I ADORE Antique quilts and really love when shows have sections for them. Houston featured 2 antique quilt exhibits, one I could photograph..... here are a few of my favorites..click for a larger image on many of them.

As you can see the orange and pink combo is NOT new!  LOVE that! Although what ARE those green parts holding up the flowers in the bottom border? See the skinny one on the right? Did they get tired or run out of fabric? looks like some ink blot splots!

Check the funky borders... they are just SO COOL. the top is way different than the rest. And there are  different flower pots around. in the center are those dots or reverse applique on the leaves....I don't know!

I've seen variations of this quilt for years and even started one at some point. I LOVE the circle block but would do a different border treatment... Maybe just the poke berries .. don't you think?

SUPER Colors and SUPER symmetry.. love the pink, navy, red ,and green combo. And would YOU do that wavy border arch? I think a nice smooth arch would be WAY quicker.. just saying!

So .... what do YOU think that gap in the top and bottom border is for?  I'm assuming that it is hung with the top at the top.. they must have something that makes them feel that is the top edge. Just so curious!

Last one for today... another really PACKED quilt.. lots of applique and look at ALL the birds in the border... a better woman than me made this.. I'd have put one in each corner and called it DONE!

They didn't know what a "Blob o'Border" was. Thanks for showing these. We think we don't have time, but these ladies were much busier than us. Chopping wood, growing and canning their food and making clothes the hard way, by hand too. These women must have had LONG winters.

Thanks Pat for showing some beautiful antique applique quilts! I have never seen so many with birds in the borders. I just bought a used copy of Red and Green Applique quilts by Jeana Kimball and think I'm turning (under) the 'A' corner. Or maybe fusing it!:)
