I might try to fuse it first to keep the raw edges under control.
I would quilt as I go around each rectangle.

Yes I know who all those guys are! I had a major crush on Redford ! big sigh ... The Way We Were (remember him in his Navy Officer's uniform - we were ALL swooning!) Barefoot in the Park, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, Jeremiah Johnson, The Sting etc Loved Paul Newman too

TheaM

lol,,, yes I do know who those guys are... but have you seen Robert Redford lately? He is not aging as well as Paul Newman did!

love the ticker tape quilts - I do that on sweatshirt jackets - fun and fast with free motion quilting!

Shelley C

I really like the looks of these ticker tape quilts and I could easily leave it raw edge. I think I like the artiness look of them and they also appeal to my frugal side. Some one gave me 'strings' to use but they are so narrow they aren't really usable, but in a mosaic like these they'd be fine...I was thinking of maybe trying my hand at a confetti quilt using them too....I'm pathetic :P Keeping every little bit of fabric. Funny thing is, I'd rather use up every last bit rather than use my yardage....sick...
I don't know Jimmy Connors..well the name doesn't ring a bell...have to go look him up....I love quilt alongs!

Lori G.

Wow, those quilts are amazing. My 12 year old daughter walked in & said, "WOW" just after I said the same thing.

Sadly, yes, I am old enough to know who all those people are! LOL! And that saying is funny when you do know them!

I'm so new to quilting & old to sewing that I'm not sure what all the things mean you said! LOL! The whole raw edge thing is SO contrary to what you do in sewing clothes that I'm learning to look at things totally differently. Not sure how I would finish that.

Cheryl

Thanks so much for sharing the ticker tape quilt. I think it's a great idea and would have no problem leaving the edges raw and letting them get all fuzzy in the wash.

Thimbleanna

I love those ticker tape quilts -- I think they'd be a great use of scraps! I couldn't leave my edges raw though -- just can't do it!!!

Sandi

The Ticker Tape quilts are awesome! I have a hard time doing raw-edge applique. I love to blanket stitch around everything! :-) Those guys? Know 'em all, however......I have always wanted the good and/or the bad sides of James Garner whether he was playing Maverick or Jim Rockford. LOL!

Okay, I went looked and now I want to do!! Yes, I could leave the edges raw, BUT - I do think I would make the seam slightly bigger so that I had room to snip it and QAYG. Then when I wash it, it would rag and I would then trim down the size... just me thinking out loud ;-)

Shirley in Canada

WOW what a post!! How do you come up with so many good ones!! Thanks for the "eye candy" trip!

Sarah Doty

Wow! Your post today has sent me off an amazing, long trip through the internet. There are so many entries about these quilts. I found a great Halloween Ticker Tape quilt. I can see this would be very addictive. Maybe I'll make some post cards and see how it goes, instead of started with a queen size one. lol Also, I know all of those people. I love that quote!

Sharon

I knew all those guys and I wouldn't mind Robert parking his shoes under my side of the bed any time. LOL Yes, even today.

4dreamsr

Yep, know all those guys! Even know who Judith Viorst is! Does that prove my age or my intelligence?

4dreamsr

I've been following Old Red Barn quilt along, tho got in late. Love this ticker tape quilt idea. Saw one on flickr that was like a mosaic. Think if I made one I would use the stitching for quilting thru all layers. Would make an interesting back. Saw some that had been washed (think DeRoo's) & they just fuzzed softly at the edges.

Grace

Yes, I did know all the names in the quote (always had a crush on Robert Redford). I'm thinking that I might like a wall hanging, but I don't think I would invest time into making a whole quilt. I think more like an "art quilt" than a bed quilt. I do love the quilt on the cover of the book.

Cindy in TN

Chuckle! Yes, I know who all those guys are! The ticker tape quilt is neat, but I don't think I'd ever do one. I've done one quilt with raw edge applique, and I don't think I'll do another. One was enough for me.

Barbara Barrier

I really like these patterns, could use up lots fo smaller pieces of frabic, I love the mosaic, great that tile artist have given us so much to work with.

Bonnie K Hunter

My girlfriend Lucy in the Netherlands is working on this tile quilt in hand applique! Here is a link to her blog post, her pics are gorgeous! http://lucyquilting.blogspot.com/2011/01/tile-quilt.html

I have seen that book cover and was curious as to how they did it. I would love to try the raw edge technique. I would quilt as you go. Would make a cute little art quilt. I will have to start saving little scraps! wouldn't it be great for using the left overs from a jelly roll?

Sue B

I love mosaics. I pick up flyers of floors done with tiles in patterns at the home stores all the time. Now I'm thinking, raw edge, fusible, whole cloth, quilted as I go. Need to try this one!

Linda P

How interesting - hadn't heard of the name ticker tape, but was actually thinking of quilts using the look of mosaics, funny how that happens. On this quilt I COULD leave it raw edge, but it would be hard, I want to do some smaller raw edge first.
Oh yes, I know all those men - the good, bad, and ugly!!! LOL Love that little heart there too!

Kasey

Love that quote at the end- and yes, even though I'm only 26, I know them all! A ticker tape quilt is on the ever-growing list of things I want to make... I wonder how well my old Fashion Mate would handle one? Only one way to find out!!!

Judy Knorr

Love the way the Ticker Tape Quilt looks and love the use of scraps, but I would have great difficulty leaving the raw edges!

Monica

Oh Pat! I do, except Jimmy Connors is a bit fuzzy. Was he a tennis player?

Diana

I have The Quilt Revival Book and am planning to make one of the quilts soon. Maybe I'll try the quilt as you go method on this one.
